And this even gets worse with the white-collar when accessing the Internet is a daily activity to update information from your boss or to receive reports or to checking email from your partners, etc.

Generally speaking, everyone knows that ‘time is money’ but they sometimes do not realize they are wasting not only their hours but also others’. In a recent survey, Salary.com has showed that:

  • Short-breaks not only keep your staff away from unrelated activities but also boost their productivity.
  • IT department could help you limit irrelevant websites by putting a filter and using software to track personal Internet activity.
  • Another way to improve employees work rate as well as save others’ time is assigning suitable amount and degree tasks with each of the staff.

2. Your company is your home and your staff is your family.

According to HayGroup: ‘Employee Engagement boosts staff’s productivity more than 43%’. As an employee’s point of view, it is bitter when other colleagues or their managers refuse to communicate with him or her. It could make the employee feel tired when thinking about the action constantly to learn why this happened to him or her. This dismissal gradually becomes an unwanted distraction as we have mentioned above.

To maintain the engagement between employees themselves or managers and employees is not complicated. Imitating that your employees and co-worker are your beloved ones. Protect, take care of them and observe, give advice in their works. And more importantly, encourage everyone in your organization, your team do the same as you, be a family.

Help your employees understand that you and their colleague are always there and willing to assist or even walk through hell for them.

3. Be fair

Everyone pursues not only happiness but also fairness in their life, not matter it is personal life, family or in their work. Being lack of righteousness, transparency in workspace significantly disturbs mental health of the person who receives the unfair assessment, it also affects productivity of your whole company.

‘Employees who believe that management is concerned about them as a whole person - not just an employee - are more productive, more satisfied, more fulfilled. Satisfied employees mean satisfied customers, which leads to profitability.’ – this is one of the famous quotes from Anna M. Mulcahy, ex CEO of Xerox corporation.

Favoritism also breaks the connection between employee and employee, department and department, etc., managers will fail to keep the engagement between every staff in the organization. It is essential to aware that every action you make, every work you say is observed by everyone in the company even if you are a team leader, manager or CEO. Be reasonable when treating your staff and then your goal will be easier to achieve.

4. Applying tools is a smart thing to do

In some cases, you need others’ help to manage, maintain and keep track of your organization process such as Vice Managers, Team Leaders, etc. and then could easily seek for a solution to enhance staff’s productivity. However, reporting is not always efficient when it takes too much time for meeting, there are a great amount of work to report or there is mistaking in one’s point of view, etc., tools/software/applications will help you on this.

Some applications are able to track employees’ activities like Alphabet’s Google Suite by Google Calendar or Google Drive, etc., nevertheless, this suite cannot fully support in providing the summary and estimating employee’s work. Besides Google Suite, Goalify is a platform applying OKR (Objectives and Key Results) methodology from Intel to manage, sum up, classify and give you useful tips that boost productivity of every person in your organization with transparency and flexibility.

5. Rewards and recognitions is your employees’ weakness.

Like we have mentioned in our ebook – A Comprehensive Guide to OKR, it is the reward and your appreciation that raise the work rate of your employees.

Recognition hungry is the top demand in the ‘Maslow’s hierarchy of needs’ not only for workers but it is a common motivation of everyone all over places. Realizing and measuring exactly the true capability of a staff is the perfect way to speed up the pulse of this person. On the other hand, this recognition not only greatly affect one or a few persons in the workplace but this is a practical example for the rest employees of your company that motivates them to compete in their office.

However, do not underestimate the importance of reward. Appreciation and recognition when finishing a task is needed but do not overuse it. At a certain time, you have to put it into action, show that you aware of their work and these awards are for their well-deserved results.
